Charging an electric car and the impact on the connection
Herrfors’ electricity production consists of several energy sources – wind power, hydropower, thermal power, and nuclear power – each playing its own role in our electricity generation.
We produce electricity both in our own and partly owned power plants, in a responsible and transparent way.

What is required to charge an electric car?
Charging an electric car can be done in different ways, and these have different impacts on the electricity connection:
Slow charging
At home from a regular socket or a low-power charging station (e.g. under 3.7 kW). Suitable for most existing connections.
Normal charging
From a charging station of 11–22 kW. May require a check of the connection’s capacity and possibly a modification.
Fast charging (DC charging)
A charging point of 22–90 kW requires a significant increase in connection size and more detailed planning.
High-power charging
Charging stations over 100 kW almost always require a more detailed review of the connection size.
Dimensioning of the connection and technical requirements
Before installing a charging point, it is important to determine your current connection size and capacity. The adequacy of the connection depends on the chosen charging method and other electricity usage on the property:
- Assessment of connection adequacy: The electrical contractor performs a load calculation and assesses what connection size you need.
- Change of connection size: If the current capacity is not sufficient, you can apply to increase the connection size from us.
- Dynamic load management: The load of the charging points can be controlled dynamically so that the connection does not always need to be significantly increased. The electrical contractor will help plan and implement dynamic load management.

Costs and practical matters
For increasing the connection size, a fee is charged according to our price list. As a customer, you are responsible for the process of the connection change and the necessary electrical installations. Practical tips:
- Ask the electrical contractor for a preliminary estimate of the costs and the technical solution.
Submit the application for the connection change well in advance.
Frequently asked questions
Not necessarily, the charging point can often be connected to the existing connection if its capacity is sufficient.
The connection change is usually completed within 1–3 months after the application has been approved.
An electrical contractor can help with a load calculation and provide a professional assessment of the adequacy of the connection.
