Changes to the electricity connection
The need for changes to the electricity connection may relate, for example, to the main fuse, the connection’s capacity, or ownership. Below are instructions for the most common changes.
Select what your matter concerns:
Changing the size of the main fuse
If you want to increase or decrease the size of the main fuse, you need our approval. A larger fuse size may require changes, for example, to:
- the connection cable
- the main switchboard
The electrical contractor will assess the need for changes, and the change will be charged according to the current connection price list.
The most common questions related to the main fuse
The size of the main fuse affects the connection’s capacity and the load on the electricity grid. Any change must always be agreed upon with the grid company to ensure safe use of the connection and the network in accordance with capacity.
The duration depends on the scope of the change. For minor cases, an electrical contractor can complete the work within a few days, but if reinforcements to the grid are required, the process can take several weeks.
The size of the current main fuse can be found on your electricity bill, on the fuse panel in the metering cabinet, or in documents provided by your electrical contractor. If necessary, you can also ask Herrfors Nät-Verkko’s customer service.

Three-phase Conversion
The main fuse can be replaced by an electrical contractor, but this change also requires our approval. The work will be invoiced according to our service price list.
Changing from a single-phase to a three-phase connection offers, among other things:
- more stable electricity distribution
- the possibility to use more powerful devices at home or at the cottage.
The most common questions about the three-phase conversion
Three-phase conversion means that a single-phase connection is converted to a three-phase connection. This increases the connection’s capacity and enables the use of more powerful equipment.
It is advisable when installing, for example, a heat pump, an EV charger, larger electrical devices, or when the current single-phase connection is insufficient.
The customer contacts an electrical contractor who assesses the need and submits a notification to Herrfors Nät-Verkko. Herrfors installs a new meter, converts the connection to three-phase, and updates the connection agreement.

Changes to the meter cabinet
The need for changes may arise, for example, when:
- increasing the size of the main fuse
- switching to a three-phase connection
- relocating the meter cabinet
- renewing an old or damaged meter cabinet
All changes require an inspection by an electrical contractor and our approval.
The most common questions about changes to the metering cabinet
The metering cabinet must be renewed if it is outdated, damaged, or no longer meets current safety and installation standards. Renewal is also often required when the connection is upgraded or when the building undergoes major renovations.
The metering cabinet is the customer’s property, and its maintenance is the customer’s responsibility. Herrfors Nät-Verkko is responsible for the metering devices and the accuracy of the measurement, but the maintenance and any necessary repairs of the cabinet itself are the responsibility of the property owner.
In an easily accessible location, usually on an exterior wall or at the property boundary.

- renewing an old cable
- installing a three-phase connection
Remember: Inside the property boundary, the connection cable is the customer’s responsibility. Cable work is carried out by an electrical contractor.

Maintenance of the connection
If you do not need electricity but want to keep the connection right, you can transfer the connection to maintenance:
- the meter is removed
- the cable is disconnected from the network, which is charged according to the current service price list
- a monthly maintenance fee is charged
The connection can be reactivated later without a new connection fee. Before reconnection, an inspection by an electrical contractor is required.
The most common questions about connection maintenance
Maintenance means that the connection is not actively used but is preserved for future use. Electricity is not supplied to the customer, but the connection remains ready for use.
Maintenance is a good option if the property is unoccupied for a long period, the building is demolished but a new one is planned, or if electricity use is suspended for an extended time.
The basic charges remain the same as during normal use. No electricity is consumed, so billing consists only of the basic charge based on the main fuse size. In addition, a disconnection fee for the connection cable is charged according to the service price list.

Frequently asked questions about reactivation of connection
You need an inspection of the installations carried out by an electrical contractor. The contractor submits an inspection report to the network company, after which the electricity can be safely switched on.
Yes. Before reconnection, you must have a valid electricity sales contract with the electricity supplier of your choice. Without it, the network company cannot switch on the electricity.
